Lightning 100 fires up "Music City Mayhem"… a local artist/band competition. Contestant's songs are featured both on-air and on-line. Listeners and friends are invited to vote on-line to move their artists up the bracket. This promotion alone doubled the station's database of followers in less than 30 days.

Lightning 100 at Air Award

Mayor Karl Dean and Lightning 100 announce a new environmental-friendly live outdoor concert series, "Live on the Green" to begin on September 3rd. The Mayor and station owner Lester Turner hold a press conference on the grounds of the site at Metro's Courthouse Plaza. The six-week Free concert series would end up bringing over 24,000 fans to downtown Nashville.

After 10 years and three months high atop the 30th Floor of the L&C Tower downtown, Lightning 100 picks up stakes and moves its digs to Marathon Village -- a recently renovated old warehouse in Midtown. The station would become an anchor tenant of the complex, which was in the process of being transformed from a 1900 turn-of-the-century automobile manufacturing plant into a thriving creative community.

Lightning 100 participates in a major fund raising campaign to assist victims from the recent Hurricane Katrina. A silent auction and telethon is held on-air and on eBay. Items up for bid included a Takamine guitar autographed by the Eagles, a private John Mayer Trio concert performance, and a Gibson Les Paul guitar signed by Les Paul. Donations are also taken for food and clothing items.

14-year station voice, Sue Wilkinson ("That British Chick") succumbs to cancer and passes away in her native London home. Her family and estate allow Lightning 100 to continue to use her voice on the station because WRLT meant so much to Sue during her life.

I started in July 2004. We were in the LNC tower on the 31st floor! Loved the view, loved the building, loved the location!!! I have always been a huge fan of Lighting 100 and was so proud to become a part of the station. Was 2004 the last year of Uptown Mix or 2005? I know it ended soon after I started. It was my favorite concert series ever! Lots and lots of great memories from many shows. Very sad year when it went away. I am sure there are more memories of that year, I will send them as they come to me.

Tuned In Broadcasting sells its rural FM frequencies 93.7 (WYYB/Kingston Springs - "The Phoenix") and 94.1 (WRLG/Smyrna - currently as simulcast of Lightning 100) to Salem Broadcasting, a publicly-owned national Christian format.

A violent F-3 tornado rips through Downtown Nashville at approximately 3:30pm. David Hall is on-the-air high atop the L&C Tower. As he sees it approach the building, he exits through the studio door. The change in the room's pressure implodes all of the glass windows and sliding doors that surround the studio causing massive damage to the equipment and studio. A steel microphone boom stand is sliced in half by a section of glass. Staffers are required to go to the internal L&C stairwells to wait out the storm as the building sways from side-to-side!

WRLT holds a "Live In It and Win It" contest at Cool Springs Galleria, where the last contestant left living in the car would win it. After 32 days, a winner was chosen. The contest received a ton of local press and media coverage.

GM David Tune decides he's had enough as "Interim" GM (since May 1996!), and President Lester Turner ups Fred Buc to General Manager.

WMMO Orlando PD, Jessie Scott arrives as WRLT's new Program Director. She is also tasked with developing a new acoustic/roots-based format for recently-purchased TIB radio property in Dickson.

WRLT's new promotional public service group "Team Green" (consisting of Radio Lightning listeners concerned about the environment), holds its first Earth Day event on the grounds of the Cumberland Science Center.

To commemorate Independence Day, WRLT holds a free concert for listeners on the site of the new Bicentennial Mall in Downtown Nashville.

First Lightning 100 New Music Sampler

Veteran Programmer Judy McNutt arrives for a short stint as PD.

A young 20-year-old woman, distraught over a recent break-up with her husband, sneaks past the WRLT receptionist and heads toward the outside observation deck balcony. At approximately 4pm, after several minutes of contemplation, she jumps to her death 30 floors below. Fred Buc was on-the-air at the time for David Hall, who was attending an industry convention out of town. Staffers are in shock over this traumatic event and counseling is offered to staffers to deal with this tragedy.

"Radio Lightning" becomes the first radio station in Nashville to broadcast a live simulcast stream of its FM signal over the internet.

Local comedian Adam Dread joins Dan McGrath on-air for mornings, adding a "shock radio" component to "Morning Lightning".

Tuned In Broadcasting, Inc. (WRLT / WRLG / Bone Music Magazine) vacates 2nd Ave. North and moves uptown two blocks to the Penthouse Suite of the Life & Casualty Building at the corner of 4th & Church. The new space on the 30th & 31st Floors (once occupied by Sen. Howard Baker) boasts a breathtaking and panoramic view of the entire city. WRLT & WRLG set up studio and production space on the 25th Floor of the skyscraper while construction of the permanent studios is being completed on Floor 30.

Peter Rodman is hired to host a weekly live talk show on Sunday night featuring local musicians, artists, live performances and conversation with music industry notables. The audience is urged to participate and call-in to Peter and his guests.

Jon Peterson hired as PD from non-comm WCBE/Columbus, OH. Fred Buc becomes Operations Manager.

WRLT becomes one of the first companies in Nashville to develop a website on the "World Wide Web" and the only radio station in Nashville with a website.
